Established in 1869...

Canyons Church, originally First Baptist Church of San Diego, has a rich history intertwined with the city itself. Founded in June 1869 by a group of visionaries, it holds the distinction of being San Diego’s first Protestant church. As a testament to this pioneering spirit, the church was awarded the city bell by founder Alonzo Horton for being the first congregation to construct a building and hold services.

For Over A Century...

For over a century, First Baptist thrived in downtown San Diego, playing a vital role in the city’s growth and history. During the early 20th century, the church’s ministry profoundly impacted the lives of many young servicemen and their families.

In the late 1970s, the church embarked on a new chapter, relocating to the growing community of University City. Now situated on a beautiful 5 1/2 acre campus at the corner of the 52 and 805 freeways, the church has continued to foster the spiritual growth and development of hundreds of people.

New Beginnings

The latest chapter in this vibrant story is the adoption of a new name: Canyons Church. This name reflects a desire to connect with the surrounding community and embody the spirit of the neighborhood, much like First Baptist did in its early days.

The name “Canyons” also holds a deeper meaning. While the Bible doesn’t explicitly mention canyons, it speaks volumes about valleys. Canyons Church recognizes that God is present not just on the mountaintops of life, but also in the challenging valleys – the canyons – that we all traverse. Canyons Church seeks to guide people through these difficult times, offering support and demonstrating the love of God to all.
